In 477 AD, Kashyapa I°, seized the throne from King Dhatusena, following a coup d’état. The rightful heir, Moggallana, fearing for his life, fled to southern India. Kashyapa moved the capital and his residence from the traditional capital of Anuradhapura to the safer Sigiriya, to escape Moggallana’s attacks. During the reign of King Kashyapa (477 to 495 AD), Sigiriya was developed into a complex city and fortress; the majority of the elaborate buildings on and around the top of the rock, including defensive structures, palaces and gardens, date from this period. Sigiriya has been elected a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Breakfast at the hotel and departure for Polonnaruwa.
Polonnaruwa was founded as a military post by the kingdom’s Sinhalese. It was renamed Jananathamangalam by the Chola after their invasion of the country in the 10th century. During this period the systematic destruction of Buddhist civilization took place in the northern plains of Sri Lanka. Raja Raja Chola I built Vanavan Mahadevisvaram, a temple dedicated to Shiva in Polonnaruwa named after its queen and is currently known as Siva Devale. The temple contained, among other things, statues of bronze statues of Ganesha and Parvati. The northern and central part of Sri Lanka was during this period ruled directly by Rajendra Chola I as the province Chola. However, after the year 1070 AD the Chola rule ended in the island, and Polonnaruwa was captured by Vijayabahu I of Polonnaruwa, known as “Vijayabahu the Great.”
